Duet
The young are afraid
To go underwater
Swallowed
within this substance
an absence
of limits
But I relish the drifting
following the bubbles from nose
and mouth
listening to
sounds
empty and pressing
Water's embrace
safe, hollow
My night ritual
a deep bath
submersion
within this void
both sanctuary and prison
The water an embrace
without connection or ties

The project was instigated by the current state of ennui that exists because of the economic collapse. The sense of unease has spread to every component of daily living. Do I “want” it or “need” it has become a common lexicon, heard in the homes and streets across America and even abroad. Fear has spread insidiously. Some handle the stress by withdrawing others take action. The action may not resolve anything, but it is better than standing still. Cocooning may not solve anything either, but it feels safer.
Water has always fascinated me, a true conundrum: it gives life but can also take it. Duets is a dance between choices constantly attempting to reach equilibrium.
