"Preserves" installation
Preserves: 2 DVD Players, 2 channel audio, aluminum sign, outdoor chairs and tablesMulti-channel audio and video installation
Preserves questions the authenticity of “nature preserves” and our duplicity in co-opting nature for recreational entertainment. In this project, nature and man, were documented at Lipold Park, Crystal Lake. Audio channels capture human activity which is ever present, cars go by, planes fly overhead, children play soccer, and lawn mowers hover nearby. At the same time, two DVD players set out as if for a picnic break, play video images of nature, moments missed in the frenzy of human play. A faux park sign records the history of the park, proudly announcing "Something for Everyone", raising the question of just what is being preserved?
Lipold Park was created in 1968 through the initial purchase of 109 acres north of Crystal Lake. I have watched the park evolve from prairie fields and marshland to soccer fields and parking lots. Today only a tiny fraction of the open space is left for plants and wildlife, only the most stalwart animals and plants remain. It began in 1986 with the first irrigated softball fields, soccer fields, and fitness and recreation trails. 1993 added the development of two lighted baseball fields, two unlighted baseball fields, five additional soccer fields, a golf learning center, expanded parking lots, picnic shelter and paths.
The Crystal Lake Park District in McHenry County personifies the struggle of protecting open spaces and servicing a rapidly growing population. The Crystal Lake Park District has stewardship over undeveloped land and water areas, their mission is to protect and preserve, but they must also provide recreational opportunities for the constituents in their district. Inevitably, to survive (obtain funding) the resources under their guardianship become little more than backyard playgrounds for the local population.
