happy New Year, 2010 feels good, lots happening. I will be highly focused on the up coming site-specific multi-media exhibition at the Nature Museum in Chicago. They call me theirs will be the Museum's go-to exhibition this spring and summer. The space is huge so there is much to do! Additionally, there are big plans for LiveBox, including the exhibition of Flow Interrupted at Hyde Park Art Center Chicago, and a screening/lecture program of Because The Night at the Aurora Picture Show Houston; both coming up in February.
The following pics are from an event sponsored by The Rymer Gallery Nashville, were Now For The Painter is currently on exhibition.

Review - Now For The Painter
For her previous installation at Rymer Gallery, Chicago-based Catherine Forster created a lush forest setting. This time around, her inspiration comes from JMW Turner — specifically, the painter's last seascapes.
"Now for the Painter," Forster's homage, consists of 10 archival laser prints — each a numbered version of the exhibition title — some with crashing waves reminiscent of Turner's seascapes, others with tranquil colors and shapes suggesting landscapes (at which Turner was also adept).
Hung on Tuscany gold panels painted to the artist's specifications and covering the room's brick walls, all the prints are taken from the four short, ethereal videos Forster created for the project.
These source videos, the most intriguing elements of the show, are the smallest elements in the installation. Filmed without sound and gently out of focus and featuring boats Forster made from the pages of Art Forum magazine, they perfectly capture the light, colors and essence of Turner's watercolors.
"Now for the Painter" is on view through Nov. 14 at The Rymer Gallery, 233 Fifth Ave. N. An artist's reception for this show and an exhibition of paintings by Gabriel Mark takes place 6-9 p.m. Nov. 7. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 752-6030 or go to www.therymergallery.com.

The exhibition at LAL was a dream - I was able to experiment with new work and new materials. The exhibition was a site specific installation of "They call me theirs". I was able to liberate the "Hanging Garden" form static walls using green landscape extension cords. It was a great experience and a chance to see a bit of Kentucky.

New media art is an art genre that encompasses artworks created with new media technologies, including digital art, computer graphics, computer animation, virtual art, Internet art, interactive art technologies, computer robotics, and art as biotechnology. The term differentiates itself by its resulting cultural objects, which can be seen in opposition to those deriving from old media arts (i.e. traditional painting, sculpture, etc.). This show is a small portion of what some artists have created in Chicago.

"They call me theirs" has been extended at The Rymer Gallery Nashville. Recent review in the Nashville Scene, by David Maddox:
..., green and yellow belong to Catherine Forster's "They Call Me Theirs." She has taken over one small room at Rymer, painted it green and lined it with metal panels printed with photos that started as video images of vegetation and foliage. Forster took those pictures and applied thick trails and smears of green and yellow paint on them, and then took photos of those results. At first glance the paint looks like organic growth, and it comes across more distinctly than the underlying photos, which are second-generation images and therefore much grainier. The paint seems more alive than the gauzy vegetation underneath. Forster decomposes organic forms, combines them with artificial material (paint), and then by photographing creates an equivalency. Forster has performed a sort of recombinant DNA between these elements, and with the metal panels where they end up.

Excerpts from Newcity Review:
RECOMMENDED
A hanging garden awaits, beckoning with its strong, curving branches, verdant
foliage and draping vines of—paint? This synthesis of nature and human
participation leads the viewer into Catherine Forster’s installation,
“They Call Me Theirs.” Forster extracted images of trees from
her own digital film stills, then modified them manually with drips and squiggles
of paint reminiscent of Jackson Pollock, before digitizing the final images
and printing them on aluminum sign panels. Her goal, stated Forster, was to
create a scene “that was more lush than nature could actually provide.”
Next Forster invites the viewer to enter a “cabin,” more appropriately
labeled a minimalist prefab, complete with the smell of fresh Home Depot lumber.
Indoors, the viewer is drawn to the video playing on a tiny screen perfectly
sized for private viewing. Looped video runs through Forster’s scenic
documentation of the four seasons in the area around her home and Midwestern
nature preserves, while digitally manipulated audio projects from two sources
provide the expected sounds of nature, such as buzzing bees, cawing crows
and wind rustling through trees. Forster admitted that the sound system was
the most complicated part of her installation, as, tellingly, she had difficulty
recording audio that did not include human noise. Her close-up shots of nature
exacerbate the sense of confinement created by the small cabin. The video
does not present a continuous journey through one environment, but rather
distinct encounters with nature, distilled by human and digital mediation.
In sum, Forster tidily encapsulates the human experience of nature in all
its artificial glory. (Karen Huang)

A new multi-media installation by Catherine Forster titled They Call Me Theirs, addressing man’s desire to mediate the natural environment through technology, will be on view at the Hyde Park Art Center from August 3 to October 5, 2008. They Call Me Theirs reverses the experience of the outdoors by neatly packaging the four seasons in a “box set” that plays on a video monitor inside a rustic cabin, suggesting that our efforts to purify our experience with nature have actually taken us farther away from it.
The project incorporates two gallery spaces and includes sculpture, video and prints.

Commission: video project for opera “Reagan’s Children”, Chicago. Single channel video developed for entire score (1 1/2 hours).
"Our 40th president was "everybody's grandfather", and his portrait looms large over our cultural mantel - the legacy of this national patriarch casts a wide shadow over American politics today. REagan wasn't just a father in metaphor, his own family has been a constant presence in the public eye. It's this other legacy that "REAgan's Children" puts to the stage.
Reagan's Children is an apolitical piece, an exploration of fatherhood across three generations: it's the story of one man from the Greatest Generation, in the words of his children, the voice of Baby Boomers, as set to music by a composer whose date of birth places him squarely in Generation X." - Joe Tracz (press release)

It was an honor and exciting to be in the "Best of The Best" video program at Scope, and the iPOD "Golden Oldies" was highly received, numerous curators and writers shared with me that it was one of the smartest pieces they had seen in the show. Review of Crossmediale by Micael Workman, New City
But reflected in the art in the current show, CrossMediale 1, is a composite of Koscielak's real promise. Right inside the door stands Galina Shevchenko's monstrous architectonic, shining silver Mylar drapery, hung from near the ceiling and dotted with miniature video monitors. Playing on them are Shevchenko's scribbled drawings, animated and backdropped against video of tulips shot in Chicago. Melinda Fries has a three-monitor wall-hung piece against the front wall of the main room, broadcasting surveillance video shot in the Kinzie industrial corridor, showing a lot parked full of construction trucks, including a crane on a flatbed. Overlaying the scene are recordings of freight trains that Fries made while riding from "Chicago to Portland via Kansas City." Catherine Forster of the fantastic video art curatorial project Lightbox has a clever three-screen fake vanity mirror and lightbox installation playing a looped DVD of "Rachel's Makeover." It's both tender and terrifying in its close-up scrutiny of a woman's face. There's a lot of good work.

LiveBox Gallery will have it's first show at the NOVA Art Fair Chicago 27-30. I decided to create LiveBox to fill a real void in Chicago. LiveBox will focus solely on screen based work. Single channel video will be the predominant medium, but any appropriation of the screen will be considered. The Gallery will operate on three fronts: the physical gallery will be a box, a 42" plasma screen mounted in a prominent location, with open access to the public; LiveBox will also create media experiences in temporary spaces and in collaboration with other galleries; finally, LiveBox will have a traveling Video Library. Check out the website for more information. www.liveboxgallery.com

Just received notification that I will be in Exit Art's April show "The Drop". Exit Art is major non-for profit space in NYC. They have a compelling track record and I'm thrilled to be a participant. The exhibition explores the political and environmental crisis of water usage. My piece is called "50,000 Gallons", a brief descriptor:
I live
in a household of 3. Our water bill documented that we used 52,000 gallons
of water between January and May of 2005. I pay no attention to the water
I consume; yet I am aware that I use it as if it will always be there in abundance.
I'm not in denial, I simply don't pay any attention to water usage. I propose
to document the entire use of water for my household in a 24 hour period.
The project is a sound piece.
The sound of water is recorded to soothe; mood music deploys water sounds;
small end table sized fountains are available for our homes; alarm clocks
can put us to sleep and wake us with the sound of trickling water. By contrast,
in “52,000 Gallons”, water sounds are harsh and abusive. The sound
records labor and waste. The mood is ambivalent.

Rojaruka residency in Latvia was superb. The residency was located on the Roja Gulf, surrounded by a virtually untouched environment. The sea, dunes, pine forests and local fishing village served as a perfect setting to reflect and create. My intent for the projects I embarked on, was to engage the local people.
