Video Commentary - Peru Diary
Peru Diary
“Peru Diary” is a re-construction of a trek in Peru. When I was
in the fourth grade, a teacher introduced me to a world outside the small
lumber town I lived in. To this day, I can vividly remember, her descriptions
of Peru, the Andes and the Amazon. In May 2004 I finally made it to Peru.
I spent an extraordinary 3 weeks trekking in Peru, and like most tourists,
I always had my camera and camcorder with me. I managed to generate 4 hours
of video and 12 roles of film in the 3 weeks. To my great disappointment,
they did not even come close to reflecting the experience. I used my dairy
as a guide to recapture the essence of my trip. Word lists, video filters
and paint subsequently abstracted the material creating my own fantasy of
Peru. The installation is intended to envelope the viewer in what has now
become my own fantasy of the trek.

Peru Diary
Installation
For the installation, I would like to envelope the viewer in the trek. All
walls, the ceiling and the floor would project video loops. The main video
(included on the DVD) would be on the center wall. The surrounding walls would
be project looped montages of diary footage. I hope to take the viewer from
the expansive illusion and wonder at the beginning of the trek to the claustrophobic
overwhelming reality at the end.
