Video Commentary - My Favorite Rhymes
MY FAVORITE
RHYMES
In “My Favorite Rhymes”, children’s rhymes are coupled with
amateur home videos, creating a commentary about family, nostalgia and memory.
Ever since I was a small child I have been intrigued by puzzles, especially
those dealing with people. My personal experience with recorded family images
is perplexing and wanting; the idealized reflections bare little resemblance
to the actual experience. Most nursery rhymes are used innocently to develop
language and entertain; yet their origins are dark. Individuals make home
videos to capture their own fantasy of family. The pairing is intended to
create new memories, surface forgotten moments, and perhaps reclaim or reconstruct
memory. The video is silent and meant to be read
like a book.

My Favorite Rhymes Installation
There is no voice, other than the reader, or music to steer emotion. My vision of the installlation is a child’s playhouse, impeccably built to look like an ideal miniature home. Painted white inside and out and sitting on pristine Astroturf, it is silent on the inside and empty except for a white book case. On the bookcase is a small portable DVD player, about the size of a child’s book. The space is welcoming from the exterior of the home, and intimate, but somewhat cryptic on the inside.
